# Maths

Overview: Spring One

This half term, in Maths lessons, Year 6 will be learning the following:

• Fractions
• Measurements

Within each of these areas, the children will strengthen their fluency and build upon developing their reasoning and problem solving skills.

Fractions

The children will be learning how to convert fractions between mixed and improper; add and subtract fractions with different denominators; multiply fractions and mixed number fractions as well as dividing fractions by whole numbers.

Measurements

The children will learn about the three measurement types: length, mass and capacity. They will learn about the units of measurements used within each category and then convert between these units. Once the children have nailed conversions, they will then apply this to a range of multistep problems.

Overview: Autumn Two

This half term, in Maths lessons, Year 6 will be learning the following:

• The Four Operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
• Fractions

Within each of these areas, the children will strengthen their fluency and build upon developing their reasoning and problem solving skills.

The Four Operations

Year 6 will be learning the written methods for multiplication (short and long multiplication) and division (short and long division). They will then use their fluency skills to reason and problem solve using this new-found knowledge.

Fractions

The children will be learning how to simplify fractions; find equivalent fractions; plot fractions on a number line as well as find fractions of shape and amounts.

Overview: Autumn One

This half term, in Maths lessons, Year 6 will be learning the following:

• Place Value
• The Four Operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

Within each of these areas, the children will strengthen their fluency and build upon developing their reasoning and problem solving skills.

Place Value

We will be learning about place value in numbers up to one million; this will include ordering, comparing and rounding numbers. In addition to this, Year 6 learn about negative numbers; this will include adding and subtracting as well as interpreting graphs with negative numbers.

The Four Operations

Year 6 will be learning the written methods for addition (column addition), subtraction (column subtraction), multiplication (short and long multiplication) and division (short and long division). They will then use their fluency skills to reason and problem solve.
