Maths at Barnham

INTENT

At Barnham, we want all our children to be confident with their ability to reason within Maths which; in turn, will allow them to embrace and enjoy the subject. To achieve this, all teachers follow White Rose Hub. This scheme is part of our Maths curriculum and it provides children with enriched opportunities to develop their varied fluency, reasoning, and most importantly, problem solving. Furthermore, our newly designed calculation policy coincides with White Rose Hub; this allows all the children to demonstrate their learning of the objectives using a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. As a result of this,  there is always an opportunity to over-learn a skill, enabling the children to apply it in several different ways. After all, our aim is for all children to embed, retain and reuse knowledge from all previous year groups. 

As well as adopting this scheme, the children are always provided with opportunities to visit our local farm at Euston, whereby they can use Maths in 'real life situations'. As a result, children truly understand the meaning behind the subject because we are giving them purposeful situations to embrace and showcase their newly learnt skills.

IMPLEMENTATION 

As a school, we believe in the importance of following the concrete-abstract -pictorial-approach as a means to developing a solid understanding of mathematical concepts which can be applied in a variety of contexts through fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

Maths is taught every day, from Reception to Year 6.  From Year 1 to Year 6, children follow the scheme of ‘White Rose,’ which supports children in learning the fundamentals behind the meanings of numbers and exploring other key mathematical areas. In Reception, the children follow the NCETMs programme, ‘Mastery of Number’, which aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children. Reception uses the White Rose scheme to cover the shape and space area of the curriculum.  Years 1&2 also participate in this programme, with the aim, over time, being that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Year 3 have started this programme too; the aim of the programme is to ensure:

• our pupils develop and demonstrate good number sense
• they develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations
• they will work to develop intentional teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in calculation and number sense for all children
• the children develop understanding and use of appropriate manipulatives to support your teaching of mathematical structures

Times tables play an important part in our maths learning, with children developing their fluency in rapid recall of tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of year 4. While the rapid recall of times tables are being developed, children are also learning how to apply and manipulate their understanding of this to reason and solve problems. Children participate in 'Times Table Mountain', to practice their tables. 

To ensure all children are able to flourish, and support them,  we follow a bespoke programme, called Number Stacks, to support their needs.

Summer Maths Activities

Keep maths fun this summer!

The summer holidays are a great opportunity to relax, recharge and spend quality time together as a family. However, the long break can also mean that children forget some of the maths skills they have worked so hard to develop during the year. Completing a few fun maths activities over the holidays can help maintain confidence and ensure children are ready for a successful start in September.

We've included a selection of summer maths activities from Third Space Learning that are designed to be enjoyable, practical and easy to fit into family life.

These include:
