DT

Summer 1

Our DT topic this half term is Textiles, which links nicely to our Art topic which is also Textiles.

In DT, we will be looking at tools for sewing, learning to thread and use a needle, as well as learning to create a running stitch. Our inspiration for this topic is The Bayeux Tapestry.

Focus question: Can two squares of fabric keep you warm?

We made holes in cardboard using a darning needle, hammer and block of wood. We then used this to sew a running stitch into the cardboard to create the first initial of our names.

Spring 2

Our topic for DT this half term is Understanding Materials. We will look at the properties of different materials, their suitability for particular uses and how properties can be changed.

Our inspiration comes from the story 'The Three Little Pigs: An Architectural Tale' by Steven Guarnaccia. We will learn about the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and have a go at designing and building our own houses out of bread.

Focus question: Can you build with bread?

Thursday 7th April 2022

Lesson 3

We designed a simple house. Then we made our own cement using icing sugar and water, looking carefully at its properties and how they change.
Using our design as a guide, we used slices of toast as building materials and attempted to build a house using bread.

Friday 1st April 2022

Lesson 2

We looked at cement and discussed its properties in its powdered state. Then we added small amounts of water and observed the changes to its properties.
