Sugar Beet Test Beds on the Euston Estate.
Autumn term saw the completion of this season's sugar beet testing on the Euston Estate. In collaboration with the Euston Estate, Matthew Hawthorne and Barnham CEVC Primary School, Otter Class have generated some concrete data resulting from testing variables affecting the sugar beet yield. Variables tested were: the method in which the ground was prepared for planting; the method in which the sugar beet was planted; and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer employed. At harvest (conducted by our year 6 pupils), the sugar beet were counted and weighed, before being sent to British Sugar to analyse the sugar content of the beet.
The project was visited by reporters from the Eastern Daily Press, who wrote an excellent piece in their newspaper as well as online, featuring photos and quotes from our fabulous pupils (please see attached link). It was great to share some of what we do in partnership with Euston with the wider community!
Not only were the sugar beet trials an excellent curriculum experience - opening up huge opportunities for learning in maths, science, English and geography - they have opened up many future opportunities as the research continues and broadens its scope in both time and space, for example looking at the variables of seasonal weather and different soil types. Furthermore, the results have provided data for Matthew Hawthorne that could result in improved productivity in the years ahead. Watch this space!

Year 5 and 6 were lucky enough to visit a Mosque in Cambridge and Ely Cathedral, the purpose of the visit was to understand the similarities and differences between Christianity and the Islam faith and in particular Churches and Mosques.
Our day began with a 2 hour tour and visit to a Mosque in Cambridge where we were greeted by the Imam. He explained to us the Mosque is the cornerstone of the Islam faith and how Muslims live by the 5 pillars.
The Imam explained to us the main features of a Mosque firstly the minaret, this is a tall thin tower above the mosque. It can be seen from far away. The Muezzin climbs to the top of the Minaret to deliver the call to prayer- this tells Muslims it is time to come and pray. Next was the Wudu, this area is where Muslims make themselves clean before going to pray in the Mosque. Finally the Minbar, this has several steps to a high platform. The Imam uses the Minbar to speak to the congregation.
Lunch was in front of Ely Cathedral where Mr King gave a talk on the history of the structure of the cathedral (built in 2 different times). We looked at the Cathedral Spire, the many fonts that were there, the pulpits and the Altar.
Once we returned to school we collated all the information and wrote a recount of our day including all of the similarities and differences. Everyone had a fun and informative day and the children enjoyed this immensely and learnt a great deal.
We are all joining in a world wide time of prayer over the next two weeks, called 'Thy Kingdom Come'.
Our Archbishop Justin has asked use to use this time to pray for people we care about, for our family and friends, for our neighbours, the places where we live, our countries and the nations.
This week we have all been going to the church to take part in some special prayer stations that have helped us to do this. As you can see the children loved the creative nature of the activities and were able to follow the instructions carefully to reflect on this.
On Thursday 20th April, Year Three and Four visited Trinity Park in Ipswich for the School's Farm and Country Fair.
A fun packed day was had with lots to see and do. The highlights of the day had to be taste testing local produce, getting up close and touching livestock and the very entertaining carrot show!
Year Four have been busy writing recounts of the day, which will appear here shortly!
Here are some pictures of our fun packed day

This will be published on the OfSTED website on 29th March 2017.
On a beautiful and bright Spring Wednesday in March, Badger, Fox, Squirrel and Otter classes visited West Stow Anglo Saxon Village.
Learning about our ancient ancestors was brought to life through exploring the replica Anglo Saxon village, built on exactly the same spaces as the post holes of the original Saxon houses were discovered by archaeologists over 100 years ago.
Close first-hand observations of everyday items gave a fascinating insight into Anglo Saxon life. To parts of shields and spears through to combs, not just for combing hair also used for combing beards and lice out of animals too!!
1-5 away victory! Extended report to follow. Cracking match, with some lovely football. Mia Sheridan was outstanding in defence, and Ewan and Mason were a ruthless pairing up front.
Yesterday afternoon saw Barnham's year 6 play their first home match of the season, and the sizeable crowd witnessed a 9 goal thriller. The match, adeptly refereed by our own Mr Holman, saw Barnham surge to an early three goal lead, only to be pegged back to three goals apiece by the beginning of the fourth quarter. Lennon Squires was outstanding again in the Barnham goal, keeping wave after wave of Honington attacks at bay, before two late goals from Archie King gave Barnham a bit of breathing space. A late consolation for Honington led to a very nervy last few minutes, but the final score was Barnham 5, Honington 4.
Pour next game is away at Hopton next Tuesday.
